Modeling of rainfall enhancement by seeding tropical convective clouds

چکیده
Convective clouds are characterized by strong updrafts, enhanced transport of heat and moisture in the upper layers and rainfall processes which are activated in very limited time interval and space and with a variable intensities. The cloud seeding for rain enhancment of such clouds is a big challenge and common practice in many areas over the world for more than 50 years. There is a strong scientific evidence and assessment on the status of weather modification from literature (see List et al, (1993), Cotton and Pielke (2007), Rosenfeld and Woodley, (1989, 1993); Silverman (2001), Levin and Cotton (2008). Over the years, there have been a number of projects which showed a more or less confidence for a rain augumentation by applying static glaciogenic seeding of cumulus convective clouds (e.g. Isaac et al. (1982), Dennis, 1980; Mason, 1982; Silverman, 1986; Cotton, 1986 and many others) A comprehensive analysis by Kessler et al. (2007, in Hebrew) and a subsequent summary by Sharon et al. (2008) concluded that seeding enhanced the amount of precipitation by about 30% in storms that produced less that 5 mm per day in Israel. In recent years models become a powerfull tools in weather modification research. Well-designed scientific experiments that include extensive measurements and model simulations are needed to determine whether artificial seeding can modify cloud structures and the effects of the seeding on precipitation enhancement Farley et al (1994); Bruintjes, (1999), Reisin et al., 1996; Cotton et al. (2006), Curic et al. (2007) and many others.

Diurnal Variation of Rainfall Associated with Tropical Depression in South China and its Relationship to Land-Sea Contrast and Topography
Convective precipitation associated with tropical depression (TD) is one primary type of post-flooding season rainfall in South China (SC). Observations of the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite have shown specific diurnal features of convective rainfall in South China, which is somewhat different from that in other seasons or regions of China. Convective precipitation is usua...

Introduction: Patterns of spatial and temporal rainfall impact on runoff and outlet hydrograph (Cordery, 1993; James, 1994). Results of different studies have clarified that simulation by using diverse rainfall data could increase the reliance of results. These were much more sensible in which areas encounter with data scarcity (Mello et al., 2008; Bekiaris et al., 2008). Rainfall properties in...
متن کاملDetection of tropical deep convective clouds from AMSU-B water vapor channels measurements
[1] Methods to detect tropical deep convective clouds and convective overshooting from measurements at the three water vapor channels (183.3 ± 1, 183.3 ± 3, and 183.3 ± 7 GHz) of the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) are presented. Thresholds for the brightness temperature differences between the three channels are suggested as criterion to detect deep convective clouds, and an order ...
متن کاملEffect of hygroscopic seeding on warm rain clouds – numerical study using a hybrid cloud microphysical model
The effect of hygroscopic seeding on warm rain clouds was examined using a hybrid cloud microphysical model combining a Lagrangian Cloud Condensation Nuclei (CCN) activation model, a semi-Lagrangian droplet growth model, and an Eulerian spatial model for advection and sedimentation of droplets. This hybrid cloud microphysical model accurately estimated the effects of CCN on cloud microstructure...
متن کاملAerosol relationships to warm season clouds and rainfall at monthly scales over east China: Urban land versus ocean
[1] This paper provides a prototype study on combining the advanced satellite observations of rainfall, clouds, and aerosols to examine their interrelationships. Monthly satellite observations from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for July (2000–2005) were analyzed to assess how urban aerosols affect cloud droplet size and ...
